The Ancona plant

The Ancona plant, located just a few kilometres from one of the most important ports on the Adriatic sea, produces medical specialities that are exported to 67 countries.

It is EU-GMP authorised and can also produce certain high-activity pharmaceuticals such as hormones and non-beta-lactam and non-cephalosporin antibiotics. The Health Ministry has also authorised production of medical and surgical supplies and the use of narcotics and psychotropic substances in the production of medicines. Medical devices can also be manufactured.
The core business of the plant is the production of solids, but non-sterile liquids and semi-solids are also important. A special department produces small batches of pharmaceuticals for clinical trials, even for third parties.

The plant has a series of certifications from the TÜV SÜD in Munich: UNI EN ISO 9001:2015 for the Quality System; UNI EN ISO 13485:2016 for the Quality Management System; UNI EN ISO 14001:2015 for the environment; BS OHSAS 18001:2007 and the recent ISO 45001:2018 for health and safety.

As part of the many initiatives aimed at environmental protection and sustainability, an advanced energy saving project has been implemented at the plant. This award-winning system is designed to reduce energy consumption while maintaining GMP parameters. It leverages favourable external climatic conditions to increase the temperature of the refrigerated water used to control the internal climate and to adapt the working set points of the air handling units. It will reduce electricity consumption by about 1,700 MWh per year, saving about 25,000 m3 year of water supplied from the public utility for domestic use (drinkable water) and about 900,000 Smc/year of methane. Further methane saving of about 190,000 Smc/year are projected to be achieved through an increase in heat recovery, by improving the efficiency of the heat exchangers' operating logics, making the system capable of better directing the water flow rates according to thermal needs.

Of the total surface area of 177,000 m2, more than 15,000 m2 are dedicated to production, 660 m2 to production of experimental pharmaceuticals, 3,500 m2 to laboratories, 5,000 m2 to raw materials and packaging storage, 24,750 m2 to distribution warehousing and 22,000 m2 to office space and systems.
